Week 6. On my work bench.....

Well this is my work bench/kitchen table this week... It is still so cold here at the moment.. I have to wear so much clothing to go out into the studio and today was especially bitter.. Better off in the warm..

No printing at the moment, the inks have gone all stiff with the cold.. That sounds a bit rude... He! he!

This afternoon we braved the cold this is the view across the river.. It was like a mill pond, so quiet, if you squint you can just see the last of the snow.

Here's hoping that it warms up a bit this week, fingers crossed, it needs to, I have frozen pipes... Which are a pain in the preverbial butt.

Right, lets get back to what my post should be about..

Inspired by a lady who asked me if I made my Christmas birds as brooches, I've made a few to see how they fly.. He! he!

So this is the work table... Well, kitchen table.. We've had about 8" of the fluffy white stuff..

It's called a work in progress.. Looks more like a big mess to me.

This is the view from one of the lounge windows. Brrr...

My shed looks cold and sad for it's self this afternoon, Norman, cleared the path for me, but it's just too cold to go out there to work -3.

Week 4. On my work bench.....

I have had some great news 'The Minories' art gallery in Colchester called me up the other day and asked if I could take in a few pieces of my work... Then the long wait............

A few days later I had an email saying YES............. Hurrah! They do like my art brooches and little lady's .. And could I also bring in something to display them on... Next emotion... Panic...

Could I find anything in my cupboards to display the little lovelies.. Absolutely NOTHING!! I couldn't find a bloody thing excuse my language.... I searched high and low... Nothing!! What could I make? Yesterday my brain ached, trying to think of the best way to display them... I couldn't think of a thing...

So we decided to go out for the afternoon to Saffron Waldon.. (Hoping to get inspired..) More about our visit next week.. Very exciting..

The idea came to me this moring... About 4am to be precise... So today I have been making up a stand to show off my brooches.. It's triangular in shape so that work can be seen from both sides... Hopefully perfect for their display cabinets.

I used an old shoe box, recycled felt and wadding and a piece of calico that I have had hanging around for ages..

Isn't it great that you can make something out of nothing. So with a little imagination and a sewing machine, together with a little inspiration from a fellow bloggers myowlbarn and cathycullis.. I made my display stand.. I hope that the gallery like it as much as I do..

Such a rotten day here in Essex. Absolutely miserable.. Cold and wet! Whilst in my shed feeling a little down in the dumps.. The weather getting me down, instead of doing what I had intended my imagination wandered...

On my work bench this morning a few more little darlings, work in progress. I have really got into my stride and love making these little beauties. I have even managed... Finally...Wait for it.... Drum roll please...

What a phaff that is, I don't seem to get any better at doing it, or any quicker for that matter.

As promised last week... Some of my charity shop finds

This book was first published in 1959, my copy was printed in 1967. I absolutely love it, the colours are amazing, and the illustrations have a very 70's feel to me, look at the man's coat.. Sargent Peppers and the Beetles comes to mind.

And what about these illustrations, the wedding is fantastic..

This fish reminds me of those nail and string pictures I made at school during the '70's... Oh no....Showing my age again..

These two I couldn't resist, just look at the covers.. Don't you just love them..

Week 2. On my work bench.....

Remember my table from last week.... The idea started at Christmas, I had such lovely comments about the little papier mache girls that I had made as tree ornaments many people asked if I had made any of them as brooches... *A Light bulb moment*

And here they are, this is what was on last weeks table the strange brown shapes they turned into these little darlings..

..little papier mache brooches each has a little bit of text picked out to describe their character.. I will be putting them in my etsy or bigcartel shop ASAP..

If you look carefully you can read their 'names'.

These have been a joy to make and I will certainly be making some more in the future.. I just love the way their little characters developed as they where painted.

This part of the blog doesn't start well but read on.... Norman and I went to visit his mother yesterday at the nursing home in Brightlingsea.. She has Alzheimer's. It was so upsetting she was in an awful pickle once again.. I could drone on about it but it isn't a pretty story for teatime on a Sunday..

So to cheer ourselves up after we sorted things out, and get the smell of the nursing home out of our nostrils, we took a long drive to Walton-on-the-Naze.. and walked along the beach, it was blowing a hooligan and the tide was coming in, wonderful, food for the sole.

On the way back we called in at Frinton.. A strange, bonkers (as my friend and Frinton'ite Alison Stockmarr calls it) seaside town..

In the window of the artisan bakers where these little gems... ALL MADE OUT OF BREAD... Would you believe..

I just love them and thought you would too...

I'll post my beach finds along with my charity shop gems in a day or so..

I'm off to watch Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC's production of Sherlock. It is wonderful.

I am aiming to post a 'What is on my work bench', post on a weekly basis.. Good intentions, I hear myself saying.. I did think about doing a daily up date, but with the best will in the world, life is too short.... So a weekly...'ish work table post is what will hopefully happen. So here goes....

Week 1... Papier mache..

... playing with a few ideas after making the Christmas ornaments which were a great success I'm pleased to say. (Just a few left at the Art Cafe in Colchester and West Mersea) The shapes on the right look a little odd at the moment, but all will be revealed in a few days...

It has been so chilly in the shed these past few weeks, I have sneaked back into the house until it warms up a bit, meanwhile I've been looking for alternative options to heat it/take the chill off. All ideas welcome..

... My lovely friend Cherry has given me an electric heater that her daughter no longer needs.. So I will give that a try over the next few days, and hopefully I shall feel a little warmer and a little more productive..

Another greener/cheaper idea is to buy thermals ..Diet starts on Monday.. Honest!

Charity shop find, OF THE YEAR!

Can you believe this find.. I was begining to loose all faith in the charity shop system.. They have got a bit big for their knickers... They are charging a fortune for second/third hand goods.. £6.99 for a ball'ed acrylic jumper I noticed last week...£34.00 for a coat that would'nt keep you warm on a summers day.

But, hidden amongst all the hideously over priced 'stuff ' was this little lot of treasure.. Mine for just £11.00 including the pastry brush.. A funny thing to be included, but hey it might be the best paint brush I ever use..

There are still gems out there, it's just that they take a little longer to find... And it's so exciting when you do.

Free tutorial - little paper bird

Hi to all my blogging friends... Hope you all have had a good time over the Christmas holidays...

I've decided to hit the new year running and get off to a good start by showing you all how to make a cute recycled paper bird like this one.

As some of you already know I love to recycle anything that would be otherwise be thrown away, I love to make it into something useful and beautiful.. And FREE!!!
If you don't know, or haven't realised it yet.....I am a cheapskate...!

You will need: -
Graph paper- Not essential.
Cereal box
Paper
Water based glue
Masking tape /sellotape
Paint,beads, lace, fabric, glitter etc to decorate..
*Just click on photo's to enlarge, copy and paste.

So you start with the pattern. Looks a little strange at them moment bear with me it works....

I am hoping that you will be able to print this off, if not just follow the pattern using graph paper.. You can in large it to any size as you can see mine are quite small about 3cm or so when finished..

Transfer the shape onto... You've guessed it .. A cereal box.

Cut out the shape x 2,

So... Here we go. The fiddly bit.

First of all to give the little bird shape you tuck the short beak piece under the longer piece and tape into place, do this on both halves. This gives the little fella a bit of an eye..

Then you tape both halves of the bird together. He should now have a bit of shape.

Tweak the two halves until they fit together and tape.

Then using any water based glue that you have to hand stick small papier mache strips all over the bird. I used an old hymn book that had seen better days... A 10p charity shop another bargain.

To finish make the little bird your own........I made them into robins as it was Christmas... I painted eyes and added a little flourish of colour and a sprinkle of glitter and he was done.. I used jewellers wire to hang him on our Christmas tree..

The possibilities are endless.. Easter chicks come to mind... If you make one or two, post them on your blog and I will link up with you to show everyone your amazing creations...

I made a few for our tree and gave the others to special friends over the Christmas holidays. They make fantastic little gifts and haven't cost you a bean..

Today I visited the Arts and Vintage fair at 15 Queen Street Colchester. It was so good, I met up with .... Drum roll please... The lovely Alexandra Fanny Davis who organised the fair, great job Alex, together with some good coffee and the most amazing mince pies... A lovely time was had.

Well, to start with I was nearly nearly late... Would you believe it, my butterflies were going berserk. Norman didn't manage to get home from work until 5.55pm, I need to leave at 6pm, so it was a quick hello and how was your day, a kiss..Dinner in in the oven sweetheart, and I was off.....

The traffic was still in the throws of rush hour... Always the way when your in a hurry... But with the traffic gods on my side I made it with a couple of minutes to spare..

Pam Schomberg met me and introduced me to a couple of fellow artists, then she had to make a dash, the main speaker Heidi Lichterman had got lost on the way to the studio's.. So there was time for me to catch my breath and meet a few people.

The wine flowed.. I wish I hadn't been driving..!

I'm not very good about judging numbers, but, there must have been 60+ artists and crafts people there by the time we sat down... Deep breaths..

Heidi Lichterman was a wonderful, enthusiastic speaker, you would never have known that she had forgotten her notes.. How did she remember it all..? Her talk was about Cambridge Open Studios how they started to present day.. So interesting, they are in a different league, but lots of good ideas and advice to take on board..

I just wish that she had had a few minutes to talk about her work.. Another time perhaps.

The came the other speakers, Doug Selway, Daphne Sandham and me! Listening to Doug, I though, sugar, I'm completely out of my depth... Help! Daphne next, practical as ever, with lots of good helpful advice and marketing ideas for next year's open studios, then it was my turn... I explained how scary it was opening my studio these past two years, how naked (Not literally...Thank God I hear you say) I felt putting myself and my work on view.. I spoke about the wonderful people that visited and about the strange ones that made me laugh, one lady in particular said that my house was disappointing but the garden was OK, she hadn't come to see either me or my work, just wanted to be nosy... You have to laugh..

Then with a few more formalities, the most amazing supper, followed by the most wonderful desert chocolate cake I have ever eaten...

There were so many wonderful people there and not enough time to talk to them.. I did meet up with a lovely friend Ellen Deval, when it was time to leave Ellen invited me to see her studio.. Enjoy..

What a wonderful evening it turned out to be, why was I so worried... Must get back to reading that book...

Way.... Way out of my comfort zone

I am so nervous....

A few weeks ago I was asked by Pam Schomberg to give a little talk about opening my studio earlier in the year...She has assured me that it won't be too nerve racking and that everyone will be kind, but that doesn't help my nerves. The evening has arrived.... I'm shaking in my boots...

It was strange the way it happened... Coincidences do happen... I had recently read about a brilliant book; ‘Id rather be in the studio’, by Alyson Stanfield which apparently gave a lot of information about taking the steps from being a closet artist to becoming more professional. Being someone who is full of self doubt, and no courage, I promptly ordered it from the local library... Too tight to buy it? ... It's an expensive book!!!!.. It turned out to be inspiring and hand-holding and helpful, she talks about being pro-active, and that it's up to the 'artist/me' to basically get of their proverbial arse and do something about it and not wait in the studio for 'it' to happen...'It' won't... So here go's..

Would any artist/crafts people like to join me at Cuckoo Farm Studios this evening.. I can give you a lift from Wivenhoe. It's free.. Let me know asap.

This week I had the great honour of going to Cherry Hall's studio and what a wonderful experience it was, it was packed to the gills with exciting projects and ideas, I wish that I had taken a photo of it, you wouldn't believe how wonderful it was...... Her latest pieces are well... Amazing.

Her work is in great demand a young chap came to collect this one while were having our coffee, I was lucky to get a photograph of it. The young gentleman also put in a Christmas order... Obviously a collector.

This is another piece that she has been working on.. Don't you just love her quirky ideas.

I love her 'nips', so intuitive.... Recycling at it's very best.

Sketches at the poetry reading

Last night Norman and I did something out of our comfort zone and went to our our first 'Poetry Wivenhoe' evening at the Greyhound, to hear Tobias Hill and Adrian May .. And... I remembered to take my sketchbook and pencil.. Hurrah! Wonders will never cease.

So with a large glass of red wine in hand ...

I had forgotten how hard it was to do the ~~two,~~ three things at the same time, listen, drink and concerntrate on the drawing.. Hang on, I'm a girl I should be able to do this easily... Maybe it was the wine...

We had seen Adrian once before at a book signing, he was so funny, his observations are hilarious.. So that was the sprat that caught these two mackerel.. We had to hear him talk and sing once more... I think back in the day he must have been a travelling minstrel.

Adrian Hill was a revelation, for someone so young, his poetry was so beautiful, especially the one about his granddad.. He also read from his new book, by this time I was so tired, but desperate to hear his words.. The descriptive way he writes, and the gentle way he spoke captured me. I shall be ordering one of his books from the library today..

Little things that mean so much...

First workshop in the shed...

So many things have happened.... Firstly and most exciting is, I held my very first print workshop yesterday... Cherry, Christine, Hillary and Linda came to learn how to make their first lino print... Yikes! Me teaching... Ahhhh...

I was so nervous.. Preparing what we were going to do, cutting paper, cutting tools sharpened (I still struggle with the sharpening), getting the pieces of lino cut to size, just small bits as we only had three hours or so and I didn't want it to be too overwhelming.. Setting up an inking table, rollers, brayer, wooden spoon, book press clean and dusted.. Well almost dusted... Camera at the ready... oOOPs..

....What did I do.. So absorbed in the teaching my first class, I completely forgot to take photo's.. Such a numpty!

All I've got is a photo of two little prints which were done by Hillary. a lady who had never done printing before and thought she couldn't draw... Amazing what can be achieved in a couple of hours...

I just wish I could show you some of the other work... Maybe they will send me some photo's... Please.

For the first couple of hours was working on a design then transferring it to the lino and getting it cut out... Not so easy if you don't have any confidence in your drawing, so with a little encouragement and how to break down an idea into triangles, cubes, circles etc.. amazing things were achieved by everyone..

After a short tea break with home made apple cake (thank you Linda) and chocolate biscuits (thank you Christine),mmmm...

We got back to the task in hand, with intaglio water based inks we started the printing, I was amazed how quickly everyone got the hang of it and such good sharp prints... They were all so industrious... I was redundant... In a good way.

The shed was buzzing with ideas and email addresses being exchanged..

A good morning was had by all... Me.. I'm shattered! But can't wait for the next one...

Things to remember..
* Firstly not to worry so much... Everyone said that they had a great time..
* Relax
* Make a time plan
* Rearrange the shed a bit better...
* Buy another apron
* Get Norman to fix the lock on the door... I broke it the other day -
* Print off some feedback forms.. Did they enjoy it? Learn something? What could I do better... Usual questions...
* REMEMBER to take photos!

If anyone can suggest anything else that I've forgotten on my list, I would love to hear from you.. Any little piece of advice will help how ever insignificant you might think it might be, I would be so grateful.. Thank you.

One of my son's friends is taking the plunge and opening a new coffee and bike repair shop in town this week it's called the 'Bike Guru Cafe . I wish them all the very best for their new venture. Bunting will be on sale at the cafe..

...At the same time.. 2 new collagraph plates of the River Colne at low water.... I'm still busy varnishing.. Hoping to print them before open studio's this Saturday.

Better late than never.. Apologies to the wonderful Linda who gave me this piece of beautiful crochet the other day at our Contemporary Craft meeting. Linda not only gave me these wings but she MADE them, they are exquisite ... I now have to make a very special angel to wear them. I hope that I can do them justice.

Sorting out over the weekend I found a card from a dear friend who is no longer here. Inside together with her love were these.... Wise words.....

I have an uneasy relationship with memories, a vexed alliance with the past.

Almost invariably I want to "clean it up," to excise the sad sections and leave out the parts of the story that still hurt, and in the retelling to somehow sidestep those times that, deep down, I cannot forget.

If we would only tell and remember the good times, I used to think, perhaps we could draw more of them to ourselves? "Cleaning things up" is a habit you learn early, before you have a chance to ponder the extent to which it will constrain your life.

It's all well and good to clean things, but when we turn to tidying up the past, whitewashing the events and people who have profoundly shaped us - all of them - we've laid our hands roughly on something priceless: the knowledge that we can walk through pleasure or pain, joy or sadness, with equal grace or clumsiness, as the case may be, that what counts is that we get through somehow.

More troubling, perhaps, we've comprised the chance to walk beside the person we follow.

The process of walking alongside must account for good and bad alike.

Following only the good means we follow the phantom, nothing more.

To find the real person, we have to be careful what we clean.

I have been working on a project which I'd tentatively started a few weeks ago, you might remember some little hand made dresses which I'd pinned to my notice board a few weeks ago that I called developing wings . At the same time I met an artist called Barbara Morrison who asked me to help her with her MA by making two postcards for the project she was working on... Which I was delighted to take part in. I continued to run with the theme which was developing, I called the post cards..'Lost children'

The work has continued to develop... It's been very therapeutic as I've been trying to get my head around all the sadness that I've been struggling with.

'The sad angel' is all part of this work, she just needed to be made...

A couple of weeks ago the talented Jill Cooper from untietheribbons had a giveaway, I popped my name down and thought nothing more.... No one was more surprised than me to get the email to say that I was the winner! So surprised that my name was chosen.. Wow!

It was a beautiful day yesterday, we were going to be in sunny Somerset this weekend but a very sad and heart wrenching thing has happened and we didn't go after all.... How I wish things were different...

So to lift us both, out of the black hole that we have been living in, Norman and I took ourselves of to Suffolk for the day.... It helped for an hour or so...

We visited a very wild and windy place on the Suffolk coast, Dunwich Heath A very beautiful wilderness. I want to visit again when there is a storm in full throw...

In ancient times it was the capital of East Anglia... coastal erosion took the village many many years ago.... There are lots of tales of church bells that can still be heard...

The weather was perfect, the sun shone, and the wind blew, the nature reserve was veritable sea of dancing purple lavender... Just stunning, someone painted the landscape just for us.

At the coastguard cottages we had a fantastic cream tea, with homemade scones and clotted cream... Not going to help the waistline, but it was soooo good.

Then we visited the Heath Barn where the 4Elements Exhibition was on, including one of my favorite collagraph artists Mandy Walden... What a joy to meet her, finally!!!

And her work..... Amazing. Mandy is a fantastic printmaker and such a lovely lady, how nice to meet someone that didn't mind sharing an idea or two, so refreshing. So inspiring...
I shall be seeing her again soon, at the Norwich Print Fair , I can't wait.

Two weeks ago I was invited to the new Firstsight gallery in Colchester to meet an artist, Barbara Morrison who is working towards her MA she asked if I would like to help her with two projects... A parcel tag project about names ... I was a bit slow with the parcel tags and forgot to take pictures before I sent them off to her...

And a postcard project.

For the postcard project I had to make two postcards in any media about anything and send them through the post to her home in West Mersea by the end of August..

Here are my efforts I hope that firstly they make it through the post and secondly that she likes them...

These two postcards started off about childhood then as the work developed, it took a different turn.... Once again my work is about loss...

'Lost Children no 1 - 'Breathe'

This is made from papier mache, a paper doll dress or a pattern for a child's dress.

'Lost children 2 - Whisper'

For this piece I have used one of the little dresses I was making the other week.. I think I showed it pinned up on my notice board in the studio. I painted it with gesso and added a little plaster for texture, several coats of paint then as above it was attached to gesso'd backing fabric. I have also stitched both cards with a red thread...(According to mythology the Gods tie an invisible red thread around the ankles of those destined to meet..)

The thread served a dual purpose one as a link to other work and secondly to hold the backing paper to the work.

Barbara will keep 'Lost Children no 1 - Breathe', but will return 'Lost Children no 2 - Whisper' to me. If they make it through the Royal Mail postal system.... Fingers crossed.

At last I've finally managed to get some work up on Etsy... A job that always takes far longer than you imagine. Has anyone got a quick method?

L- R......... 'They Moved', 'Beval', 'Nash' and in the little paper boat 'Mask'.

'They Moved' is from my little Paper Houses collection. The art doll is a stump doll made from quilters muslin and paperclay, she has been painted with acrylic paints and finished with matt varnish. Her little papier mache house has been made with some pages from a vintage copy of 'Wind in the Willows, it has been finished with some stitching, a sweetheart window above the door.

'Beval' and 'Nash' are small paperclay sculptures from my Weird Heads series.

'Mask'' is one of my Sail boats and Theatricals collection, the 'Mask' is a stump art doll made from quilters muslin and paperclay, he has been painted with acrylic paints and finished with matt varnish. His little papier mache boat has been finished with waves made from a vintage map a muslin sail and a vintage button.

'Down to the beach we go'
This is a one of a kind art book for the winner of this 'Summer giveaway'.

To tell you the truth, I have been desperately trying to write a business plan. I'm struggling..
How do we fill in a sales flow and cash flow charts as an artist...?
How do we summarise what we do in a sentence or two...... ?
As for pricing structures... Give me strength...!
Then there is the question what is my business called....?
I'm going to go nuts here!!! And I'm already most of the way there. HELP!

So.... Instead of finishing the business plan, I've popped out to the shed and had a little play around. Then had the brainwave.... I'd ask for your help... Please.

I've made a little one of a kind folded art book using one of my lino prints. and a little poem... Then with hand painted seaside touches, I've bound the little book with read thread and finished it with a flourish of wax which gives it such a special translucent look and feelings of holidays gone by.

Ceramic artist, Wivenhoe and crabbing

The glorious weather continues... Karen Risby and her two beautiful children came to visit yesterday. The sun was shining, and a visit to the river was the order of the day, the children were so excited, so with buckets, crabbing lines and a supply of bacon for bait, we walked down to the river, the tide was high, just perfect for casting their crabbing lines... They managed to catch 49 crabs...

Four ice creams, three glasses of blackcurrant squash, one apple juice, four coffee's and and two giant bags of crisps... Two excited, tired and happy children... Perfect.

So good to take the time to enjoy our little village and pass the time of day with a friend...

West Mersea... Prints, crafts, and vintage..

The first little West Mersea vintage and craft bazaar was a success... It was held in the local scout hall which was perfect.

This is my little stall, it was my first vintage and craft bazaar. I wasn't very organised, a bit chaotic really..... I need to sort myself out a bit better for next time, I still find it very difficult to price my work...I expect a lot of you do too.

I did manage to sell a couple of prints, some bunting and a few 'vintage' items... With the profits immediately going towards the plans/map chest that I brought on ebay earlier in the week... Result!

The 'Contemporary Craft group' girls were there, Joan Linda and Cherry . It was lovely for our little group to get up and start moving forward, potentially and most importantly selling our wares... Here's to the future girls.... x

I also met some other enthusiastic crafts people that I hadn't met before, together with the fantastic people of Mersea Island who turned out in there hoards to view and sometimes buy our wares..

There was also great tea and cakes....Together with over £100.00 raised for scout funds...... A good day was had by all...

I must just say a special thank you to Hillary who organised the day.x

West Mersea - This weekend..

I shall be setting up my stall at the Scout hut on West Mersea this Saturday Morning, selling prints and paintings, beach huts, local boats and seaside links..... Together with some 'Seaside Bunting' that I have been busy printing. Maybe a couple of art dolls too...

I have been having a sort out and I've decided to sell some of my huge collection of vintage china, Kitchenalia and linen it seemed an ideal opportunity to sell and maybe buy a few things...

There will also be tea and cakes.... Sounds like my kind of Bazaar....

Well, what do you think?

I've printed them on news print with caligo safewash inks, why do I always have this messy problem with these inks... This morning I shall be printing with oil based inks... Hoping for sharper results

This is the lino so far....Needs tweaking... I'll proof print it this morning...

I couldn't leave you this morning without a look at my wonderful pumpkin patch..... Well, to be truthful, it's the strip of ground just under the conservatory window. I planted climbing french beans at the back then, in front the Buttercup squash... With the intention of keeping the weeds down... It worked.

The squash are going mad, I think that they are going to take over the patio with all the rain that we have been having. That and the contents of my compost bin last spring....

It's so exciting to see them all chasing around the patio.....I have no idea what they taste like..... Risotto anyone? ...... Favorite recipes please......

Can I make chutney out of Buttercup squash? Jam? Just a thought....

West Mersea - Beach huts and boats

I have an 'Art and Craft' market booked in a week or so on West Mersea.

As usual I have all my best ideas at the last minute. Hopefully I will have enough time to print them, get them mounted and framed..... I'd better get on and finish the drawing, cut the lino, dampen the paper, the ink........ Ooooh..... Just getting ahead of myself there....

The first is an idea for a print of the beach huts on the island, a popular subject.... Hopefully profitable too..

These are for another little project, a work in progress you could call it....Don't know which way to go with it yet, bunting, a book maybe?? Or just a set of little boat'y prints... Sail boats and traditional rigs

On Saturday I braved the rain... It was pouring down... I got SOAKED! I went to the launch of 'The Essex Print Club. They only have a facebook page so far... More information as soon as I have some... It could be very interesting..

...... For my dear mother in law, Yesterday we visitied Frances, she is 83, and has been in a nursing home with altzeimers for almost 4 years steadily getting worse....She has no idea who we are, or who she is, .......We have to smile... (That's how we cope).

Frances get's upto 'tricks' (career's words, not mine) as her illness deteriorates, she constantly folds tissues, and tucks them in all maner of places, hundreds of them, draws full, cupboards full.... She also wanders around the nursing home and picking up books or anything that's shiney.... And hids them..

The latest development with her illness is that she has accidents... Several times a day, somewhere in her mind she knows that she shouldn't, but of course she doesn't understand.... So she hids the evidence.... We can't find her knickers, or trousers for that matter, she should have lots and lots.... Yesterday I couln't find a single pair..... So I'm off to town to buy big knickers.. I shall need strong arms... We need lots... There will be a shortage of big pants in Essex...

On a brigher note.. A sailor went to sea, sea, sea..

I'm hooked on bunting, haven't printed this one yet but having fun making the plates.

A fairy flew in from America

How thrilled I am, my faith in humanity has been restored. There are truly kind people in this world......

My long time blogging friend Rafael, from mytinystudio has sent me a wonderful surprise, a magic fairy.. I can't begin to explain how happy this has made me feel this morning....

This little fairy has arrived almost 9 years to the day since my beautiful daughter Samantha was killed in a road accident... The loss of our daughter has been so awful, I can't begin to explain.... The sadness that overwhelms me at this time of the year is tremendous.

So my friend Rafael, your timing is perfect. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness in sending me this little treasure. She couldn't have arrived at a better time, I shall treasure her always. She has cheered me up no end.

Thank you Rafael you are such a sweetheart, I send you a big, big hug.xxxx

I've just been on a printing course at Cuckoo Farm Print workshop with the amazing Jill Desborough and learnt how to do soft ground etching . I also took my first tentative steps with aquatint...

I started off with a drawing, a Jackdaw in a cage, a piece of zinc was cut to the size of the drawing. Then the zinc plate is meticulously cleaned with whiting, washing up liquid and a barbers shaving brush.

The plate is then thinly coated with a softground.This is done by putting the plate to warm on a hotplate, a very small amount of the 'ground' is applied and then roller'ed to create a very thin coating, changing the colour of the zinc from silver to golden syrup.

My plate was then laid on a sheet of paper, I drew around it for registration then my drawing was laid on top, the edge of the drawing was sellotaped to the sheet of paper underneath with the plate making a sandwich in the middle, so that I didn't move whilst I was transferring the drawing.

When I'd finished drawing the plate was placed into the acid bath for a few minutes to allowing the acid to etch the areas which had been removed by my drawing....This is the 'transfered' drawing to the plate.

The plate is then cleaned, inked up and printed. At this stage it was all a bit disappointing.
So I did a little dry point etching, drawing into the plate with an etching needle, adding a little detail.

Then another print was taken. The plate was cleaned once again. Improving?... A little. it shows the etched lines

The next stage was the aquatint, with a newly cleaned plate, all ink removed, the plate was put into the aquatint box, it was switched on for a split second then the 'rosin' was allowed to settle onto the plate for a couple of minutes. This stuff 'Rosin' is a carcinogenic so health and safety precautions where taken.

The plate was then very gently heated.

Next step I applied 'stop out' varnish to the areas that I wanted to keep brightest. Back in the acid, this time it was stronger. It was in there for 30 seconds, then rinsed.

Then back to the stop out varnish and the acid bath..Twice more.

Final prints... Paper a bit cockled, but you get the idea.

What a day, my brain ached, so much information, so much to learn, immediately booked another day with Jill. My brain was on overload..... And all for an amazing £25. For the day!!! What a bargain.

Then a quick dash home, hair wash, bath.... Which I desperately needed to relax, and then off out to the most amazing dinner party that I have been to in a very long time.

Needless to say I was exhausted yesterday....Too tired to blog...... Too much brain work yesterday too many Pimms and far too much wine.... And great food... I'm on a diet starting today.. Ha! And blogging...

*** Now I'm off to the post office.... I have a parcel from America waiting... WHO? Has sent me a parcel? Exciting... ***

The nottage Maritime Institute, is situated on the waterfront of my little home village. It is a fantastic place where you can learn to build a dingy using traditional methods of working, look at the clamps that are holding the planks in place.

I think that these boats are called 'Stem Dingy's'.... please don't ask me what a 'Stem Dingy' is, I haven't got a clue, just love the process and thrilled that traditional skills are not being lost.

Every summer their is an exhibition of work by local artists which is always worth a look, this year my favorites were Alison Stockmarr - Textiles and Paper and Barbara Pierson - Painter.... Have a look at the homepage nottage-maritime-institute you'll enjoy it I'm sure.

Every May bank holiday Monday we have a music festival here in the village ...

Our very own 'mini' Glastonbury...

We hope against hope for good weather, with our fingers crossed for sunshine. It worked! The sky was blue and the sun shone brightly, just look at King George's field... who would believe it..... Several thousand people young and old just chilling and having a good time.

Everyone meeting up with friends, young and old alike.....long time no see, hugs and kisses from friends united once again... Together with manly handshakes of course.

To our delight 'Hot club Gitane' were playing in one of the tents, we sat down at the alloted time.. (on the grass, no chairs here) and were enthralled once again with their musical delights.... Hope to see them again soon...

While the band played I watched this wonderful fellow teaching dance. he was amazing, gently leading his partners' and making it look ooooooh, so easy. We a chat with him after, such a character, so gentle and so encouraging, said that everyone could learn to dance. We suggested he started giving dance lessons in the town. I'm sure they would go down fantastically. He was amazing.. I want my name to be first on the list.. Maybe I shall learn to dance at last.

There were lots of stalls, people selling all manor of things, second hand clothing, bric -a-brack and vintage items, hand made soap and cake..... (No I didn't have any)

I love to see the VW vans and what ideas their owners have come up with.. Above, a coffee shop.

This green one sold amazing food... It looked so good, the van and the food!

This is Owen or rather David Wyn Tudor Owen. Wow! What a name! Another wonderful character at the fair. I sold all of my pottery equipment to this fellow two or three years ago when I had to give up the studio.. I was so glad to hear that the kiln is still working and that he is enjoying his work... If anyone is interested in his beautiful pots

Bookshop: Unplugged

In the smallest venue - Our local bookshop

We were lucky enough to get tickets to a magical musical event.

The amazing ‘Hot Club Gitane’ came to Wivenhoe last night, they are Manouche Jazz (Gypsy Jazz), musicians, and they were superb.

There is not a lot of space, in our local bookshop, we were squeezed amongst literary greats, and the gardening section, did we mind..... Not one bit.!

As you can see by the expressions, everyone was enthralled by their amazing abilities to play music that tickled your sense's, whilst dancing in your head..

The 'Hot Club Gitane' musicians must have been exhausted, they played for an amazingly and wonderful 3 HOUR's! - It felt like 20 minutes - always a good sign. Would we go to see them again.... At a drop of a hat!

A good time was had by all, great venue, great music and great company, and a glass of wine, can anyone ask for more.... Thank you Ginny, Sue and the team who organised the event and made us feel so welcome.

First I have to tell you about the ''Weird and Wonderful Wood'

An event held at Haughley Park, Wetherden, Stowmarket last weekend. I can't believe that I haven't been before.. Click on the link, it was wonderful, with everything from wood turners to a teller of tales, from paper making to a man making wood burners out of recycled bits from motor bikes and window latches - They had to be seen to be believed - Amazing...And they worked. There was also a Juggler called 'Dan The Hat' (do have a look at the link, so clever, he had everyone enthralled) and a man carving with an 'axe'!!!

One of the best bits of the day....... I had the great pleasure of meeting the lovely, and very talented Rima Staines and her partner Tom Hirons, who was charming. I forgot my camera... Numpty!!! Needless to say I haven't any photographs of Rima's wonderful work or of Tom's amazing leather masks.... Or of this truly wonderful day, so please take a look at the links, I have tried to find some pictures of Tom's work but have only found his website of poetry and tales to be told, which will have you all captivated I'm sure.

So, together with great food, amazing musicians, craftsmen and women, and the many wonderful people whom we met..........you have my idea of a perfect day... Oh! almost forgot, there was a lovely man playing a 'Hurdy Gurdy' as we left to make our way home... A perfect ending, to a perfect day.

Well it's taken me a week or so to write this post about our wonderful trip to the Isle of Wight and Somerset.

Portsmouth - The Spinnaker Tower

We arrived in Portsmouth early in the hope of going up the famous Spinnaker Tower. Alas we were a little too early, so a photo from ground level will have to do....... It is huge, amazing and suprisingly a very female form.... All will be revealed later...

As we left Portsmouth I glanced back to get a photograph of this amazing old figurehead looking out across the docks. Our crossing was calm and with a beautiful sunny day it was glorious.

We stayed in a wonderful B&B run by a wonderful lady called Jo. We have never eaten such breakfasts, 5***** absolutely fantastic, and the room was so clean, we would go back at a drop of a hat... Loved it and lovely landlady. Hey Ho!

We visited Queen Victoria's holiday cottage.......... Impressive!

There were few of these wonderful fellows around the gardens, which were a sight for sore eyes despite the lack of rain.

Swiss Cottage

She had a 'play house' built for her children. ( bigger that our home) It was just like a real house, she had it built so that her children could be taught all aspects of running a household.....A very forward thinking lady.

The house and grounds were spectacular, it is just a shame that you are not allowed to take photographs inside the house.

Another day, another adventure... No, we had not gone to a desert island, we are still on the Isle of Wight, can you believe it? This is the beach at Fort Victoria.

The beach walk was wonderful with lots of flotsam and jetsam to photograph and sketch.

I must have taken a hundred photo's of old tree's on the beach let alone the wonderful patterns the seaweed had made.

We visited Karen Mead, the printmaker I told you about in a previous post, she was lovely and her work.... Was wonderful..... And huge!. Some almost as tall as me. Both Karen and her husband Lawrence made us very welcome, lots of tea.... In fact we were so busy talking that I forgot to take any photographs, so you will have to click on her name and visit her website to see her amazing work..I hope to see her again sometime soon.

Back to Portsmouth.... Click on the photo above and you will see what I mean... All woman, in a 'man's world'... We get everywhere....

Then we were off to Somerset to visit our daughter and her lovely family....

We all piled in the car and went on a visit to Wells Cathedral, it just blew me away.... Our grandson looks so small . Bless..

My favorite bit, the staircase up to the chapter house.... So beautiful built in 1265-1280... The stone masonry was phenominal.... It was amazing. I will go back for another look, I could happily spend hours and hours in the Cathedral and grounds... Another day soon, perhaps..

We found a couple of love birds at the Chalice Well Gardens. One of their favorite places in Glastonbury.

On the down side..... We received a phone call from home to say that our home had been broken into while we were away...

We didn't let the news spoil the holiday, but it was a shame and made us feel quite sad. On the upside our son was not hurt, he was out, thank goodness.

The little 'BUGGERS'...... Bold as brass, kicked in the front door.... What a mess, new locks and door frame needs a lot of work to repair it.... Such a shame for the old house. And all they took was the TV... Nothing much else to take... We are not big 'stuff' that's worth pinching.

The police arrested 6 youngsters from the Harwich area, who have been bailed, waiting for the evidence to be processed.... Words fail me....

Special thanks to my brother in law who made good the door and made sure that our son was OK.

At first we were amazed, first time for both of us, we felt privileged, then after an hour we began to think that it was annoying after more than two hours it was driving us nuts. So loud, sounded as if it was just outside our bedroom window... IT WAS!!!

Who'd have thought we would have heard a nightingale in our back garden.... those little ~~blighters~~ birds have some lungs.... So loud and full of energy....She says brightly .... Here's hoping that he has a night off tonight...

It all started yesterday, I visited Viv at hensteeth, she had written a post about her condition, it touched a 'nerve' with me... I left a short message to say that I understood and sent her my love. This morning I have have opened my emails to find this short reply..

Here goes.... Brace yourself...... A pot of tea is required....

Three and a half years ago I had an operation on the right side of my neck to remove a lump fearing the worst and hoping that it was benign, which it was. My problem is that the surgeon doing the operation accidentally cut through the spinal accessory nerve which let to my right arm not working, numbness behind my right ear and neck (I'm right handed), and in constant pain ever since.

Despite a repair to the nerve which has helped with movement but now as well as my neck numb, my right arm from under the arm where the Ulna nerve was taken for the repair, to the tip of my third and little fingers are also numb. The pain in my neck and shoulder was relieved slightly and I have movement, but it is still relentless.

Sorry if I'm going on and on but it is so good to get this off my chest.

As you know that the pain killers that the doctors prescribe for nerve pain are anti-depressants, which left me a quivering wreck. suffering from panic attacks and walking around as if I was in a bubble while the world continued around me. I was very frightened... Not good. Others gave me heart palpitations, and a very sore stomach... It continued as I worked my way through the usual Amatriptyline, Dicloflex, Pregabalin and others.... to no avail. So for a long time now I've relied on Ibuprofen and paracetamol, which I take in copious amounts which can't be good in the greater scheme of things.

The nights are the worst as I understand they are a problem for you too. I wake constantly, walk the floors, read, watch awful early morning TV and listen to late night/early morning radio to distract my brain from the pain, I eventually give in and take more tablets... It drives me nuts.....!!!!!!

The exhaustion is beyond words, I walk around in a daze most days, my memory is rubbish and have to rely on lists, and if I loose or misplace one of them.. I'm sunk!

Simple tasks take forever, the ironing takes several attempts, the iron being heavy and the movements used cause great pain. Hoovering, the same problems, cleaning the bath, unless Norman does it, (My darling husband) it's not good! And takes forever, because I have to stop after a few seconds, then a break of sometimes an hour or more for the pain to subside, then try and attack it again... And it goes on, to clean the bathroom sometimes it can take all day... And shopping, another problem. Someone suggested that we get it delivered. The delivery charges from supermarkets are so expensive and without my wages, money is tighter than ever, look after the pennies and as my mum used to say, the recession hasn't helped the situation has it? Everything is getting so expensive, food is ridiculous, and petrol !!! I'm sure you understand all of this...

An how I miss work, after our beloved daughter Samantha was killed in a road accident work was my saviour, it saved me from going down a very, very deep dark hole. The camaraderie and the conversation were a form of therapy for me. When I hear people moaning about their jobs, I feel so sad and sorry, which is most unlike me. My cup is definitely a cup half full... Thank goodness!

Norman has been a star, patient beyond the call of duty, never once getting cross, never moaning that he hasn't had a good nights sleep, never once suggesting that I go and sleep on the sofa.... Always there, when the pasta needs draining or the sheets need changing... Visits to the hospital etc, driving 99% of the time (I can only manage to drive short distances), he is truly my rock, my star. Without him I'd be sunk. What can I say about him, it brings tears to my eyes just writing this down. I love him so much. Without Norman, my wonderful supportive children and my friends, who knows?

There is some good news........

I have a wonderful acupuncturist who helps control my pain which gives me some relief, for which I am grateful. This afternoon I shall be having several needles stuck in my neck and back, which in turn will be connected to an electrical appliance. Oh, what joy! It might be an area that you could look into it's worth a try, if you are like me you will try anything. There have been times when I have wished that my right arm could be removed. which I know is daft, but pain does cause you to have these strange thoughts.

Another area that I have looked into which has helped is mind control, which again might seem far fetched to some. For me , I use a distraction technique, like when a child is having a tantrum. I try and force myself to carefully focus on something else, distracting myself from the pain that takes over. It could be anything, the nearest thing, for instance, focus on a fir cone looking very carefully how it is constructed, all of the little sections, and the amazing spiral that nature has created.... It truly helps. Another way is to sit quietly and concentrate on your breathing, concentrating and listening to every breath, And thank goodness for my walking boots.. An excellent investment, I walk miles on bad days.

My art work has been a saviour, I can focus for short amounts of time, with Radio 2 or 4 to accompany me, I'm surprised at what I have achieved. And the studio that Norman has built me... What can I say... Words are now failing me... I can hear you say in thank goodness for that.. He! he!

I am afraid that by now you will need a very large stiff drink, tea will not hit the mark, so bored with my rantings. I thank you for this opportunity to write it all down. it's as if I needed permission to write... It's the very first time that I've written it down...

We are off for a couple of days to the Isle of Wight, leaving our youngest in charge, he hasn't got a lot of work on at the moment but doesn't want to come away with us... Understandable!

It is quite a shame really, he is desperately trying to finish his City and Guilds as a carpenter but has a few 'projects' to complete, but they are not forthcoming, even on a voluntary basis.. Anyone having a roof done or new stairs put in???? That could help him get his ticket? Wivenhoe area would be good...

Collagraph - Brightlingsea beach huts with water colour

In between visits to the acupuncturist and feeling sorry for myself I have been working and getting very cross with the safe wash etching inks that I purchased at some considerable expense, trying to do the right thing..

Drypoint plate - Perspex - Not looking too bad

I've spent the last week or so faffing and fiddling around trying different methods to see how best to use these dam inks. Sorry about the language, they have truly tried my patience.

I've been trying to decide which of my art dolls to give away, yesterday I took my grandson to the park and the seed of an idea was planted... I asked Reu which of my dolls I should give to someone as a special gift, he chose 'Off to the Park', he said it was his favorite and his best. So here is what my gift to one lucky winner will be....

"Hi,we are the twins, and we are... 'Off to the Park'. And this is our perambulator.. Our artist likes that word she says that it sounds so much better than pram!".

"Our artist has put one of her special labels on the bottom of our perambulator, so that you can remember who she was in a hundred years time...Long after she is gone and just a vague memory.... If we are looked after our artist say's we will be around for a hundred years, hopefully to become an heirloom within someones family".

A walk in the Park' is made entirely of papier mache then painted and finished with two coats of matt varnish to seal in the art work. The perambulator has been finished with vintage buttons, which are fixed into position, they do not turn.

Glastonbury

Last weekend we helped move our darling daughter and her family to Somerset. Their nearest town is Glasonbury, she can see the Glastonbury Tor from her bedroom window. It is a sight for sore eyes.

While the stronger members (the men folk) of the family continued unpacking the van, it is a cheaper way to move yourself but I don't think that they will do it again.... We popped in to Glastonbury for the usual milk and bread, we stopped for drinks at a lovely little cafe, and while we drank our tea, my grandson looked on, fascinated at the colourful extravagance of the Faery folk that were milling around the town.

On the steps of the Town Hall were these wonderful fellows, they were getting ready for their Faery Ball, this young man's music was haunting.... I wish I could find a link so that you could share the wonderful experience.

The reason for making this collagraph plate I read this -

The barnacle goose gets its name from an old notion that it began life in a shell, growing on a seashore ‘barnacle tree.’

How could I resist making a Barnacle goose plate.. Just need to get on and finish both of these plates, between making ginger bread biscuits and the washing... What shall I do first?... Biscuits... They are in the oven.. Smelling delicious...

We visited the local Auctions the other Saturday, just because it was rainy and we couldn't get on with the studio, and quite by chance we happened to see these three treasures, well in fact we saw four... One got away.

The Laura Knight is my favorite, she has been a hero of mine for many a year, her sketches dance on the page here is a link to see more of her work. Dame Laura Knight was made a Associate of the RA in 1928, being only the second woman after Anne Surymerton.

The Vanessa Bell drawing is foxed but I love it just the same here is a link to Charleston - Vanessa Bell's home where you can see more of her work and that of other Bloomsbury Group artists. If you ever get a chance to go to Charleston House, go... It is wonderful.

The Edward Wolfe is one that we brought because my darling loved it, we think that it is of the River Thames but we need to do some research. We think he was also one of the Bloomsbury Group.

As for the one that got away.... A Henry Moore sketch..... Gutted!
